XAVIERA HOLLANDER – WORLD RENOWNED AS ‘THE HAPPY HOOKER' PRESENTS HER LATEST THEATRICAL CREATION: EARL OKIN, MUSICAL GENIUS AND SEX SYMBOL AND DUKE, GEORGE, COLE, HOAGY, TIM AND FRIENDS……
SHOW ONE: EARL OKIN, MUSICAL GENIOUS AND SEX SYMBOL
Songwriter, Jazz and Bossa Nova singer and headline comedy cabaret concert artiste, there is nobody remotely like Earl Okin. He has performed everywhere from the Royal Albert and Royal Festival Halls to The Palladium and Wembley Arena in London, to The Apollo Theatre and Birdland in New York. Earl has worked with everyone from Benny Carter to Paul McCartney and counts among his friends Billy Connolly and Sacha Baron Cohen. Here in Spain, he offers two shows, demonstrating both sides of his talent...
Earl's comedy ‘Musical Genius and Sex Symbol’ is witty and sophisticated and he has performed more comedy shows at the Edinburgh Festival than anyone else has ever done. He was described by one critic as a cross between Victor Borge and Harry Connick Jr. Truth to tell, Earl's humour is quite unique...there's nobody like him at all...
So come along and find out why he IS an international sex-symbol and musical genius, with lots of surprises along the way
Friday June 5th – 8pm Saturday June 6th - 8pm Black Box Theatre. Calle Notario Luis Oliver 6, Marbella Centre Booking: Xaviera 952 857575 Or Black Box Theatre 952 779172 PRICE Euro 20
SHOW TWO: DUKE, GEORGE, COLE, HOAGY, TOM and friends...
Whereas Earl’s initial theatrical genius is based on exactly that; Theatre, this production however exudes his others talents; humour, jazz and his performance as a musical and song-writing performer.
In a nutshell, ‘Duke, George, Cole, Hoagy, Tom and friends…’ will blow the minds of many, as they listen to Earl’s renditions of the finest and most loved performers of our time. It is quite plainly an unmissable and eye-opening show.
Earl will explain how some of the best songwriters worked and give at least one example of how NOT to write songs! He is a great musician and showman. It had been a long time, since I witnessed an artist win a crowd's favours in two minutes. This happened at the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague. His music? You have to find this out for yourself. He sings with a beautiful voice, perfect for the Brazilian/Jobim type of Bossa Nova songs he does. He plays guitar and piano.
A real treat is his 'voice trumpet': he can make those fantastic sounds that helped make the Mills Brothers famous. Earl's inspiration here is clearly the early Ellington horns. He can do an astonishing Whetsol. But he also did a brief Cootie, Brown and Bigard.

Reactions to CONTINENTAL CAROUSEL:
What an incredibly funny show that was. It has been so long since I really had a good cry from laughing so hard. Everyone was laughing all the way down the street and it made a very Merry Christmas sound echoing through Marbella as people head off in different directions to find their cars and head home.
I could hardly look at the show for laughing and there was Ana to my left all in a ball also crying with laughter which didn't help me control mine one bit. I guess I was really suppose to whip Fifi's bum and not the floor but I was going for the real whipping sound that seemed to flop off the end of the whip. How eager I was to hear what you were going to sing and was just not prepared for anything at all so that was a double laugh when your voice sounded even more like opera than the star herself!!! For a minute I thought it was "Figaro!"
So, a good time was had by all and a very Merry Christmas of laughter.

XAVIERA HOLLANDER PRESENTS:
MOURNING GLORY - THE FUNERAL OF THE CENTURY REVISITED
Written and performed by comic/actor David Benson
January 9 and 10, 2009 at Black Box Teatro
In 1998, exactly one year after the death of Diana, Princess of Wales David Benson’s second solo show was the first to examine in detail the events of August 31st 1997 and the funeral that followed. A smash in Edinburgh, the show was equally successful at the Sydney Opera House. Now, in a specially updated new version of the show, Benson once again turns his sensitive but sardonic attention to one of the defining events of the last Century.
They said that “Nothing would ever be the same again.”September 1997: the entire country ground to a halt for the Funeral of the Century. Yet twelve years later, the events of that day and the week leading up to it have taken on a surreal vagueness. Who can now remember which celebrity mourners showed up to pay their respects at Westminster Abbey? What unprecedented gesture did the Queen make as the coffin passed her front door? And just who, if anyone, was responsible for Diana’s death, anyway? David Benson examines these and other questions with the same acerbic wit and charm that have made his shows “Think No Evil of Us” “My Life With Kenneth Williams” and “To Be Frank” such favourites with audiences throughout Britain.
Take a front row pew at Westminster Abbey and SEE: Cartland - Branson - Kissinger - Barrymore -Cliff! - Elton - The Two Toms (Cruise and Hanks) - Dickie Attenborough- Tony - George Michael - Al Fayed - Mrs. Windsor and the entire Royal Family - and many, many more!
Avoiding much of the waspishness that could be visited on such an easy target, Benson delivers a touching, sometimes despairing rendition of the funeral in Mourning Glory.
Reliving that afternoon inSeptember, he introduces the celebrity cast one by one: Elton John and George Michael; the two Toms, Hanks and Cruise; Messrs Branson and Barrymore. It is a ghoulish collection, but all are upstaged by the presence of the Queen.
SHOWTIME: JANUARY 9 AND 10, 2009 AT 21.00 HOURS
BLACK BOX THEATRE c/ Notario Luis Oliver, 6 Marbella Centre

Mother, triumphant over her adversary. The rest of the Royal Family are portrayed as a sad collection of bewildered onlookers, sitting silent and nonplussed as first Earl Spencer delivers his onslaught and then the audience outside the church sets off a response that eventually infects all but the Royals.
The effect of familiarity is aided by Benson's excursions into impressions, which range from Frankie Howerd to a wonderful take on Tony Blair's Olivier- like funeral delivery of Corinthians: "The impressions relax the audience, it makes them trust me."
He is still, one suspects, rather envious of the more direct approach of one of his heroes, Quentin Crisp. "I remember he said, 'Diana was trash and she got what she deserved. How dare she divorce the heir to the throne and try to marry an Arab?'" But that's a stand- up line, and David Benson doesn't do stand-up.
What the critics say about Mourning Glory:
“... Praise should be forthcoming for sharp comic observation and Benson's increasingly impressive stage presence. His take-off of Tony Blair's funeral speech was almost scary, and his ability to interact with the audience strangely comforting. In the hands of the less accomplished, much of this material could prove clumsy and tasteless...”
Colin Somerville - The Stage
“... Surely nobody could make the national psychic trauma that was the death of our beloved Queen of Hearts anything other than the most ghoulish joke? David Benson could. In his skilled hands we learn of the real meaning of the day - "it took our minds off the boredom of our lives"; we learn why people lined up in Belfast to sign the book of condolences - "the queue was short"; and who the most nervous person in Britain was that sunny day in August - "It was Liz [simulates crown]. She was bricking it." For the sheer range of his performance, the tautness and vitality of his language, and the masterful comic insight, David Benson has few peers. And he can sing, the swine. Miss him at your peril...”
He bought a ticket, jumped on a plane and set off. No Rough Guide in the world could have prepared him for the consequence...
From the moment his plane lands in Caracas (without his luggage) we're on a roller-coaster ride down unexplored tributaries of the Amazon, across the snow-capped peaks of the Andes and into the depths of some of the most brutal prisons in the world.
A catalogue of close scrapes and surprise encounters - drug-smugglers, Dutch airline hostesses, Carmelite monks, Maoist guerrillas, Mancunian ornithologists, Amazonian Indians and a French Shaman - not to mention crocodiles, jaguars and giant shit-eating centipedes!

"In the mid 1980's, Peter Searles went to South America and ended up in Chile . This wonderful and timely one-man play tells the story of the time he spent there. Delivered raconteur-style, direct to the audience, with no props save his own malleable face, Searles has you in the palm of his hand from the moment he opens his mouth... a natural story-teller and talented comedian; everything about the show is understated and spot-on, including the music."

If time travel were possible, Xaviera would reach back to the early part of the last century and bring you Tallulah Bankhead- the Legend. And what a legend she was! Brash, ribald, outrageous, outspoken and an exhibitionist, she was also known for her generosity toward her friends and kindness to animals and children. She was a party favorite for outlandish stunts such as doing cartwheels in a skirt with no underwear or entering a soir?stark naked.
Possessed of a tremendous energy level, very few people could keep up with her. She smoked over one hundred cigarettes per day, drank gin and bourbon like they were water, and carried a suitcase-full of drugs to help her sleep, stay awake and just function in general.
She had a mouth and wasn't afraid to use it! In addition to her wild personality, Tallulah was known for her wit. Often quoted, she liked to have the last word on everything. “The only thing I regret about my past is the length of it. If I had to live my life again I'd make all the same mistakes - only sooner.” Of her own behavior she said, “Nobody can be exactly like me. Sometimes even I have trouble doing it.”
In addition to acting, she also performed monologues and songs. While there may never be another Tallulah Bankhead, there are those who come close to emulating her style and toward that end, Xaviera Hollander is proud to present Tallulah Dahling, singing in the tradition of her namesake - in a show you will never forget: Tallulah and the Boy. The tunes they sing will play in your head for days and you are sure to leave with a smile on your face!
About Claire Wilkinson – a.k.a. Tallulah Dahling.
Like the famous actress whom she strongly resembles, Tallulah Bankhead, our Tallulah was convent educated and, like Tallulah Bankhead... she never stopped talking, dressing up or acting in her own private and personal productions. At seventeen, she was enrolled in the Guildhall School of Music and Drama - but found it so boring that one day she just walked out of the school and across to the Mermaid Theatre where she had a chance encounter with Sir Bernard Miles. Before the evening was over, she landed a job with the theatre company- as an understudy, acting in small parts, and as an assistant stage manager. Sir Bernard took this youngest member of the cast under his wing, found her an agent and, when the leading lady fell ill, personally coached her when she took over the larger role.
Soon offers of work and television parts followed, as did an offer of a screen test in Rome, which she turned down. Her namesake Tallulah Bankhead fell in love and sailed to England... but Claire fell in love and gave up the stage. She flew to Rome to pursue her amour, and she found work as a model for the fashion house of Gattinoni. The Italian lover did not work out, but then neither did the unhappy marriage which followed and produced children and an inevitable divorce.
But now anno 2009 she is back, living in Marbella, and has her own inimitable show. And what a cabaret performer Claire is: energetic, vibrant, brilliant, electric- everything one could want in an evening of singing entertainment.
But there is more:
In yet another encounter of destiny, Claire met Warren Webley in Granada and the Cabaret Evening Event, that you are invited to share with us, Tallulah and The Boy, was born.
And who is Warren Webley…The Boy? Warren Webley, an accomplished pianist and composer, is Principal of the Stagecoach schools in Fuengirola, Marbella and Gibraltar. He trained at Liverpool College of Performing Arts and gained his diploma in Music Performing Techniques with Honours in 1993. Warren has worked professionally throughout the UK, including the West End, in numerous theatres and studios and toured with 'Brotherhood of Man' amongst others. And so together, Tallulah and The Boy bring you a dazzling and unique show with songs from the 30's, 40's, Sondheim and Kurt Weil…
What the press says about their show:
'An evening with a touch of theatre about it.' ‘A blast from the past', ‘a touch of New York' 'The costumes, hat changes, hairstyles all adding to the glamour and theatricality.' ‘A singing actress with great emotion' ‘Something that's been missing along the coast'
